About the Campus
Patten University is located in the city of Oakland, California, south of downtown and across the bay from San Francisco. The local neighborhood is culturally rich bringing together people from all over the world.
The five-acre campus, which is centrally located in the Fruitvale-Coolidge Avenue residential district, includes a classroom and administration building, the campus church ("Christian Cathedral"), library building (with computer lab), Tom Patten prayer chapel, campus activity center, faculty office building, staff office building, communications center and student residence halls. A beautiful plaza adjacent to the University church fronts the main educational building, and an open space with expansive lawns and a fountain graces the area between the prayer chapel and the activity center. A park like atmosphere has been achieved by a landscape design that includes expansive lawns, flowers, plants, redwood, palm, olive and other varieties of trees.
The San Francisco Bay Area is a beautiful and culturally diverse educational center of the United States. A great variety of recreational, athletic, cultural and religious activities of interest to students are within a few minutes of the Patten campus.
San Francisco is twenty minutes to the west via the Bay Bridge or Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART). Lake Merritt, a 155-acre lake, surrounded by beautiful Lakeside Park, is three miles from the campus. The East Bay regional Park System contains 26,000 acres of semi-wild recreation areas. Mild year-round temperatures are an excellent feature of the Oakland area, with prevailing westerly winds from the Pacific Ocean bringing warm winters and cool summers. The annual mean temperature is 57 degrees.
Cultural and educational activities thrive with a wide venue of museums and fine arts groups in Oakland and surrounding cities. Nearby the University of California at Berkeley offers library resources of more than seven million volumes and the Graduate Theological Union, the world's largest center of ecumenical theological education, catalogs about 350,000 volumes. Patten University students may use these libraries and check out books for a small annual fee.
Patten University provides spiritual activities ranging from small community groups to chapel services. Students worship and serve in a number of the nearly 400 churches in Oakland.
Natural beauty, cultural diversity, educational resources and ministry opportunities make the Bay area an inspirational place to live and study.
