Patten University Selected From Among Thousands as a Best Value School Award Recipient

Rigorous selection process conducted by committee of former college presidents, university CEOs, provosts and professors.

Oakland, CA March 9, 2015 — Patten University, has been selected out of nearly 8,000 postsecondary schools as the recipient of a Best Value School award. The award is issued by University Research & Review (, a company dedicated to improving the process by which a student selects a postsecondary school.

Patten University is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges Senior College and University Commission. In March 2013, Patten University launched a next-generation, proprietary online learning model, which allows students to complete accredited courses at their own pace and, most importantly, provides an affordable option for higher education at just $2,600 per academic year — one of the nation’s lowest online tuition rates for a college degree. Patten University helps guarantee successful course completion by continually assessing students’ performance and adjusting tests frequently to ensure comprehension.

Dr. Thomas Stewart, President of Patten, received the award on behalf of the university today from URR Founder Joseph Schmoke. During the ceremony hosted on Patten’s campus, Schmoke stated: “It is our distinguished pleasure to present the award to Patten University. We hope current students and alumni take pride in this honor, and anyone searching for a quality, reasonably priced college education should strongly consider Patten.”

The committee, which reviewed over 100 nominees out of the thousands of eligible schools, is made up of former university presidents, CEOs, provosts and professors. Schools cannot pay to receive the award; it has to be earned through the nomination and committee evaluation process. The committee chose Patten because it met or exceeded rigorous standards, including a combination of cost, accreditation, variety and quality of school programs, and student satisfaction with the institution.

“On behalf of the Patten Board of Trustees, the faculty and administration, and our colleagues at UniversityNow, we are honored to receive this award from University Research and Review,” noted President Stewart. “Two years ago, Patten began the process of refining its mission, and we have been working hard behind the scenes on making quality higher education accessible and affordable to everyone, particularly career oriented working adults. We have grown from nearly 200 students in August 2013 to over 2,000 today. We are honored to receive this award from URR because, consistent with our mission, it strongly suggests that we are successfully providing students an easily accessible, high quality and affordable regionally accredited postsecondary education.”

“Our committee prides itself on combining our extensive experience, knowledge of postsecondary education and insight into what provides students with good value when selecting a Best Value award recipient,” says Schmoke.

Patten will retain the Best Value School designation for one year. Award recipients must re-qualify every year.
