Student Life

The life of a Patten University student consists of many different aspects where the depth of participation can depend largely on the student.  There are many avenues where one can participate, as well as many settings where one can’t help but participate!  As a student at Patten University you will be introduced to casual settings where the confluence of student’s lives and backgrounds meet and mingle.  Such settings may include the Café Leon, where students gather to chat over coffee, tea, and studying, or the Lion’s Den, where the game of billiards is played.  The Library is another, where intensive study and discussion groups form.  The democratic style student association is one that prides itself on their campus events, such as the ‘Spiritual Emphasis Week’, the ‘Latin Fiesta’, and the ‘Luau on the Lawn’.  Dorm Life offers a tight-knit community where you are never too far away from you friends, yet privacy is still within reach.  Finally, our other clubs and teams, such as the Patten baseball and softball teams, are there for you to participate in, whether as a player, or as a fan!

A message from the Student Body President

Dear Patten University Students,

This year will be full of exciting events, and we will have so much to look forward to! We will be going bowling, make s'mores on San Francisco's Ocean Beach, sample Latin flavor at our annual Fiesta, and boot, scoot and boogy at the hoe down, with movie and game nights sprinkled throughout the fun.

The second semester will bring even more festivities. Get ready for the Luau on the Lawn, Battle of the Sexes, Going Green for Saint Patrick's Day, and all the competeition and fun of Spirit Week, which all lead up to the event of the year, Block Outreach. This is our opportunity to give back to the community, and share with them the great love God has shared with us.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your class representative.

With much love and appreciation,

Dorine Mata-Hinds

Student Body President, 2011-2012

A message from former Student Body President

I came to visit Patten University from my hometown, Atlanta, Georgia, and quickly learned that this was exactly the school I was looking for. I had been searching and deeply considering several other schools but none of them had the one thing I was looking for. I found that one thing at Patten and I’ve been happy in making my decision in attending ever since. Our urban campus is in the heart of Oakland where students are highly encouraged and daily given the opportunity to get their hands dirty by helping, serving, and caring for the community around us. Our primary concern is compassion for people and the world, and we know that the Bay Area is such a great starting point for people who are starving for that touch. Patten University has equipped me with so much more than just knowledge for the work field, but a hands-on and face-to-face experience of touching others lives. After all, I feel that is what a higher education is all about. Finding and discovering who you truly are as a person, expanding your knowledge in preparation for a successful life, and growing outside of a classroom setting by getting in touch with the needy world around you.

Peace & Blessings,

Ashley M. Harris

Former Student Body President 2010-2011
