WHY CHOOSE PATTEN UNIVERSITY?

The Master of Arts in Education and Teaching Credential Programs are designed with the working person in mind. Courses are offered on weekday evenings and Saturdays, and many courses meet every other week. Also, we have a small student to teacher ratio, which means that our students enjoy more interaction with their instructors, allowing them an opportunity to learn from educators with a wealth of knowledge and experience.

Our faculty are highly qualified to prepare teachers for inner city schools, as well as schools in other areas of California. They have taught for many years in public education, predominantly in grades K-12, and some have taught or are currently teaching at other Universities. Most of the faculty have completed Masters or Doctoral studies in areas which are at the heart of inner city education.

In addition to having knowledge of current educational theories and practices and the challenges of inner city schools, our faculty also possess the language skills and cultural knowledge and sensitivity to address diverse needs. Many of them participate in and offer workshops for various school district employee groups in areas such as multicultural education, computer science, Open Court, Tribes, and conflict management.

Patten University in general, and the Credential Programs in particular, have recognized the importance of achieving ethnic diversity among faculty and teacher candidates so that they will represent the ethnic groups of school-age children. The University has actively recruited faculty and students across a broad spectrum in order to produce ethnically diverse and highly qualified teachers for local school districts. The Education division Faculty have presented in multicultural workshops conducted by ethnic minorities as well as integrating cultural sensitivity and knowledge throughout the program.
